Domain Name Overview

What is a Domain Name? A Simple Guide

Think of a domain name as your website's street address on the internet. It's the unique, easy-to-remember name that people type into their browser to visit your site, like google.com or favohost.com.

Technically, every server on the internet has a complex numerical address called an IP address (e.g., 123.45.67.89). A domain name is simply a human-friendly label that points to that IP address, so people don't have to remember long strings of numbers.

The Parts of a Domain Name

A domain name is made of several parts, read from right to left. Let's look at an example: blog.favohost.com

  • .com: This is the Top-Level Domain (TLD). It's the extension at the end of the domain.

  • favohost: This is the Second-Level Domain (SLD). This is the unique name you choose and register.

  • blog: This is a Subdomain. It's an optional prefix used to organize a site into different sections, like a separate store or blog.

How Domains and Hosting Work Together

To have a working website, you need both a domain name and web hosting.

  • The Domain Name is your address.

  • The Web Hosting is the actual house where your website's files are stored.

To connect them, you use Nameservers. Nameservers act like a GPS, telling browsers around the world that your domain name "address" points to your hosting "house".

Why is a Domain Name Important?

  • It is Your Brand: A unique domain name is the foundation of your online identity and helps people remember you.

  • It Looks Professional: A custom domain is more credible and professional than using a free service or social media page.

  • Custom Email Addresses: It allows you to create professional email addresses (for example, you@yourdomain.com), which builds trust.

  • You Own It: When you register a domain, you have control over that piece of online real estate.
